The Way of the Wilderness

NOTE: When we live in a prophetic age (and we do) and are among a prophetic people (and we are), then we find the prophetic word in all kinds of places. We might hear God speaking in repeated 11:11 on a digital clock, or highlighting a passage in his Word, or in another book, as here. This particular prophetic word comes in the form of a college term paper (and a term paper at a notoriously anti-Christian school, at that!), but I believe you will recognize the breath of God on her words, though you may need to dig a little deeper than usual.

If you are not going through the “troughs” referenced here, then people you know are, you lead people who are, or you will at some point be one of those people yourself. The “troughs” are a clear trend among a good portion of the prophetic community in our Northwest region at this time, which means that this word is appropriate for the prophetic community in the region at this time, particularly regarding our responses to the trials and discouragements of "the trough." Listen for the breath of God in here. Your comments are invited at: http://www.facebook.com/northwestprophetic.

The “Law of Undulation,” or the Way of the Wilderness

“We didn’t count on suffering…we didn’t count on pain…but if the blessing’s in the valley…then in the river I will wait…” – Delirious

Christians often speak of “seasons.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 says “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…” One of these seasons is what Screwtape calls the “trough.” In letters eight and nine of The Screwtape Letters, the elder demon, Screwtape, writes to his nephew, a novice demon, about “The Law of Undulation.” This law is a major principle in the Christian walk. While Wormwood, the novice, is thrilled about this condition of spiritual dryness, the trough, Screwtape is much more cautious, and writes at great length about how God (The Enemy) uses the trough to His advantage. Screwtape’s terminology is of “troughs and peaks,” but Christians often refer to “wilderness” or “desert” seasons, and to ‘hills and valleys.” It’s all the same concept. All Christians, at some point, go through these ups and downs.

While Wormwood is eagerly planning the ways he can use his “patient’s” trough to his advantage – and in fact, the demonic can use troughs to their benefit – he gets a stern correction from his uncle: “Now it may surprise you to learn that in His [The Enemy’s] efforts to get permanent possession of a soul, He relies on the troughs even more than the peaks; some of His special favorites have gone through longer and deeper troughs than anyone else.” Consider Moses, who spent 40 years in the wilderness with the Israelites, but who remained faithful throughout. Or Job, who had all kinds of horrible things happen to him, but still declared, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” (Job 15:1) Or David, who often felt abandoned by God, and did not hesitate in saying so. In Psalm 22, he cries out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; and in the night season, and am not silent…” Perhaps even Jesus was in this trough, when he echoed David’s words on the cross. Certainly these are good examples of God’s beloved experiencing deep valleys, or troughs, as Screwtape calls them. Screwtape also says “Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.” All of the aforementioned people prove Screwtape’s point. Despite their trials, their pain, or what seems like God’s absence, they ultimately remained faithful, and what’s more, they remained obedient.

Troughs, or valleys, or wilderness seasons, generally do not constitute the fun part of being in relationship with God. In these seasons, it is harder to hear God’s voice, feel His presence, or even see evidence of it anywhere. Doubt and depression often enter in. Screwtape harps on this when he encourages Wormword to get his patient to think in terms of “phases.” We wonder if we ever heard God, if He was ever there, if we really witnessed those miracles. We can even begin to wonder if we are really “saved.” These are the times where we must rely on what we know to be true, not what we feel is true. It doesn’t matter what the trial is. What matters is our response. Are we going to give up on God, write our whole relationship off as simply a “religious phase,” as Screwtape would like? Or are we going to take advantage of what God has for us in the wilderness?

Looking through the Scriptures, it is interesting to note how often those in the wilderness are led there. They didn’t just find themselves there, completely by accident. The Israelites were led out of Egypt into the wilderness. Not only were they brought out of slavery, but they witnessed miracle after miracle, like the parting of the Red Sea, bitter waters made sweet, manna sent from heaven, and water brought from the rock. It might be safe to assume that God was with them. And indeed He says “For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These 40 years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked for nothing” (Deut. 2:7). Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He countered satan’s tempting with the Word (Matt. 4, and a good lesson for us). And then there is Hosea 3:14-16, which is perhaps the most moving passage about the wilderness in the Bible.

14)”Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
Will bring her into the wilderness,
And speak comfort to her.
15)I will give her vineyards from there,
And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope.
She shall sing there,
As in the days of her youth,
As in the days when she came up from the land of Egypt.
16)”And it shall be, in that day,”
Says the Lord,
“That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’
And no longer call Me ‘My Master.’”

While we may not see, hear or feel God in the wilderness, in the trough, in the valley, it is in this place that we are schooled in His grace, His provision, and His love. The Israelites – though they complained bitterly – lacked for nothing, with all the miracles they witnessed and lived on. Job had everything restored to him. David continued to offer that “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15,) and was considered “a man after God’s own heart.” And I don’t need to describe what Jesus did. In the trough, we have to walk by faith, and not by sight, which we as Christians are called to do, anyway. (2 Cor. 5:7). We have to trust that God is with us, even if we can’t hear or feel Him. And we know that He’s with us, because He promises to never leave or forsake us. While we may enjoy the mountaintop experiences, or the peaks, we grow in the wilderness, in the troughs. Screwtape himself says, “It is during such trough periods, that it [the human] is growing into the sort of creature He wants it to be. Hence the prayers offered in the state of dryness are those which please Him best.” In the trough we learn to rely on God and on His promises. We learn to seek more diligently after Him, and in doing so, can be rewarded with the some of our most intimate and rich moments with Him. Look at what He says in Hosea: He will “allure her, will bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfort to her.” Comfort in the wilderness? Yes, it is possible. And in verse 16, He says “You will call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Master.’” What a picture of intimacy! On the mountaintop, or on the peak, to use Screwtape’s word, we tend to become self-sufficient. In the trough, we are unable to be self-sufficient. We may find ourselves stripped of all that we once relied on, meaning that we must depend solely on God. In this time, it helps to remember that His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). And in the trough, we are indeed quite weak.

I don’t mean to paint such a glorified picture of the trough. It is not an easy season to be in, and we can be quick to resent it, and resent God for it. But as I said before, it is not simply our being in the wilderness that matters; it is what we do with our time in it that makes the difference (and often determines how long we remain there). It can be a time of real intimacy with God and tremendous growth in our faith. It can also be a time of depression, doubt, and even worse, self-pity. This is when Screwtape and company can really enter in and rob us of what God has for us. Doubt can destroy all the good God had planned for us. Wormwood is advised about this: “Do not let him [the human] suspect the law of undulation. Let him assume that the first ardours of his conversion might have been expected to last, and ought to have lasted, forever, and that his present dryness is an equally permanent condition.” It is easy, when in the trough, to see it as permanent, and lose hope, and even worse, lose faith. Screwtape continues: “When you have caused him to assume that the trough is permanent, can you not persuade him that his ‘religious phase’ is just going to die away like all the previous phases?” We need to be like Jesus in the wilderness, responding to the devil’s taunting with the truth, the way Jesus responded with “for it is written…” each time the devil tempted Him. And the truth is that the trough is not permanent; God’s love is.

We cannot reason our way out of the wilderness, the valley, the trough. We may remember with longing the joyous feeling of being on that mountaintop, and work our hardest to get back up there. But if we don’t pause, seek God and see what He has for us, we miss the potential for so much. We might miss blessings, miracles, opportunity for growth, and worst of all, true intimacy with God. Though it may be dark, the fire by night will guide us, and we will lack for nothing. God will be with us, even if His presence is not as readily apparent as it once was. It may seem like He’s gone silent, or even worse, left us. It may seem like we are being punished for something. This is not the truth. The truth is that the wilderness – though difficult and often painful – is when we get to mature as followers of Christ, to learn to rely on God rather than people or things, to stand on His promises and not be swayed, no matter what may come against us, and above all, to really draw near to Him, knowing that He never has and never will leave us. In the trough, if we respond well, Screwtape’s fears will be justified, and we will become just the sort of “creature” God wants us to be.

'Men of Portland': The Lord Commands You To Go Now

INTRODUCTION

While ministering in the Portland / Vancouver area from April 15th -21st 1998, I sensed the Holy Spirit showing me how He wished to move in that area and the northwest region. The biblical framework for this move is found in Judges, Chapter 6 and 7, the story of Gideon. God's move through Gideon and his army is centered around religious reform and military action based on a coalition of Israelite tribes. In the Church today, we have recently, through the Renewal, experienced religious reform. I believe that the Lord is now revealing to us a military strategy based on a coalition of Christian Churches.

THE LORD NAMES YOU

Prior to calling Gideon forth for military action, the Lord named him anew, identifying his forthcoming role in God's army.

Judges 6:12 "The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour." (KJV)

I believe that God has unveiled his army of warriors to many Christians in this region, and that he has also named you in terms of your rank and function in that army.

THE LORD COMMANDS YOU TO GO NOW

Though Gideon had lived a life of oppression, robbery and confinement under the ravages of the Midianites, and though, in his own understanding, his family was among the poor in Manasseh and he, the least in his father's house, the Lord said in Judges 6:14.

"Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?"

I believe that the Lord is saying to us to "go now" in the strength that we have.

GOD WISHES TO FULFILL A RESOUNDING AND WIDESPREAD SCATTERING AND ROUTING OF THE ENEMY IN OUR TERRITORIES

The Lord made known the extent of His intended uprooting and annihilation of the enemy to Gideon.

Judges 6:16 "Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man."

I believe that, in a united and progressive thrust forward with the Holy Ghost, Christians in the northwestern territories will uproot the enemy from the land.

UPROOT ANY VESTIGES OF WICKEDNESS THAT WERE INHERITED THROUGH YOUR GENERATIONAL LINE

Judges 6:25 "… throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it."

I believe that some, either have already, or will experience the Lord requiring a complete uprooting of all vestiges of rebellion, idol worship, witchcraft, false religion etc. in their family line.

Judges 6:26 "And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock …and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down."

I believe that the Lord requires a fresh consecration of oneself unto God. Some of the old 'furniture' of religion may have to be removed to make way for a new out-pouring of the Holy Spirit into our Churches. The former must make room for the latter, which will bring about a completely different, more liberated and culturally rich landscape for the worship of the Lord. Many people may have already experienced a certain separation from former religious organizations as a preparatory step towards what lies ahead.

PROPHETICALLY CALL YOUR BROTHERS IN ARMS FROM THE SURROUNDING TERRITORIES

Judges 6: 34,35 "But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him. And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also gathered after him; and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them."

I believe that men (and women) are to call together the Christian communities of the northwest to unite in the fulfillment of God's battle strategy. The 'trumpet' symbolizes the prophetic voice and also worship. I believe the Lord desires a convening of Christian communities for a large 3-day festival of worship in the Portland, Oregon area primarily. I believe that the timing of this event should be in early October 1998, coinciding with the Feast of tabernacles. This may be followed by another similar event in Olympia, Washington and later at another location. During that 3-day period of celebratory worship, with the dance and the 'Shout', the Lord will liberate His mighty men from the last vestiges of bondage and oppression under the ruling principalities of this territory and the religious (and other) organizations to which they have been tied. It will be like the crossing of a national boundary - out into new, liberated courses, which were destined for their lives. These men (and women) will be released into a company of mighty warriors, of forerunners, of like-minded men.

MANY PEOPLE OF GOD WILL PREFER TO REMAIN IN THE CAMP

There will be many among the Christian community who do not wish to go up into battle; they are occupied with the affairs of home; some are fearful at heart; they prefer to remain in the camp. They are freely permitted by God to refrain from the new thrust forward by the spirit into the enemy's territory.

Judges 7:3 "Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying 'Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from Mount Gilead'. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand."

SEPARATION OF THE MIGHTY WARRIORS

There will be a further sifting of the troops, much like that done by military organizations, where individuals are selected on the basis of personal merit, training, experience, gifting and bravery of heart, to go up into battle.

Judges 7:4 "And the Lord said unto Gideon, 'The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there; and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee. This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go."

I believe that there are many Christian men and women in the northwest in whom God has staked his visions for the region. In the coming months, these visions will be stirred up within them. There will be an intense desire to run faster, to go up, and to take the land. To these people, I believe the Lord says 'Do not expend your energy in an attempt to bring all members of your communities with you. Do not pour your visions into the hearts of those who will choose to remain in the camp. Rather contain your strength; set your face forward to going up to battle; the Lord will soon liberate you into a company of mighty men who are like-minded and who will fight with you.

A NECESSARY DISTANCING FROM THE CAMP

There will evolve a certain physical and spiritual distancing between those who go up to battle for new territory and those who remain in camp. Let those who remain in camp give all they can to furnish the needs and to equip those going forth to take the land.

Judges 7:8 "So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men, and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley."

Those who go forth do so in a company of warriors. They are not cut off from the community of God's people in camp. They are simply separated for a time by virtue of the requirements of their visions.

DIVIDING THE WARRIORS INTO SEPARATE COMPANIES

Judges 7: 16-18 "And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. And he said unto them 'Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of the camp, and say, 'The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.'"

I believe that the mighty warriors will group, and fulfill their part in separate locations, though they all form part of one battle strategy. I see three separate thrusts, going north, east and south in these territories.

THE STRATEGY AND BATTLE OF THE LORD

The main tenets of the strategy are for the Church to (1) go up to battle, take your positions and stand. The Lord will go before you and destroy your enemies. This is linked to the description of the Lord's strategy given to Jehoshaphat when he defeated the Moabites and Ammonites (2 Chronicles 20).

2 Chronicles 20:21 "And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth forever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten."

(2) The second tenet of the strategy is "the trumpet and the shout" i.e. prophecy, praise and worship. As this is fulfilled at a number of locations, I believe that the Lord will shake the enemy strongholds, causing spiritual forces to flee in many different directions.

Judges 7:20-21 "And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried 'The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon'. And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled."

I also saw prophetically, that as the worship and the shout went up, the hard dry earth of the territory suddenly cracked like a mild surface earthquake. I believe that this represents the fallow ground in the hearts of the population being ploughed up by the Lord. There will be a widespread and all encompassing shaking by the Lord of the unbelievers in the region. I believe that as companies of evangelists later go out to sow the seeds of the gospel amongst the general population, they will find the soil of the peoples' hearts already ploughed and ready to receive the Word of the Lord.

(3) The third aspect of this move is the re-formation of the Church as a 'city without walls' as described in Zechariah 2.

Zechariah 2:4-5 "… Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the Multitude of men and cattle therein: For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her."

I believe that the Lord desires to use many people from different denominations, who will work together to fulfill these words. In doing so, He wishes to remove some of the walls between Churches, to intermingle their strengths and anointing, and to show forth his bride in a glorious unity of purpose.

THE WHEAT HARVEST FROM THE CHURCH

Lastly, I got a sense from the Lord that this year he would be taking a wheat harvest from the Church. This referred to the men and women that he had carefully taught and trained over the past number of years and whom he considered to have reached maturity. These would be a "first fruits" unto the Lord. They would be separated for the coming work of the Lord, some of which has been outlined earlier. Pastors, themselves, are included in this wheat harvest. Some would be separated unto greater works beyond the boundaries of the local body. For pastors who see some of their 'finest' people leaving: they are to know that this harvest is to their glory for it is they who have nurtured this crop to maturity; furthermore, the separation is unto the planting of many new works for the Lord. In this way, the parent Church will multiply as well as continue in the addition of members. Lastly, the new 'families' formed after the separation will be places wherein the 'parent' pastor should always be received and honoured for his labours.

A Word for the Pacific Northwest

by Bob Jones and Paul Keith Davis

Over the last few years, the Holy Spirit has highlighted certain regions of the nation as targets for unique expressions of spiritual impartation and visitation. In many cases, the specific location has been determined, in large part, by "wells of revival" that were experienced in prior generations. It is as though the Lord is redeeming those areas and capturing lost anointings, and utilizing the prayers and sacrificial lives of earlier saints. This is certainly not the only thing He is doing but a significant part.
One such area has been the Pacific Northwest. Over the last three years we have made numerous trips to this region, as have others, by the instruction of the Holy Spirit. Bob Jones actually had a vision several years ago, in which he saw three "Eagles nests" being established in the Northwest. These areas of refuge will be utilized to provide prophetic training, power evangelism and serve as a launching for many saints into their calling and commission.

October Conference

Wanda and I did a conference in Coeur d'Alene, ID this past October, hosted by Mike & Kari Browning. While there, a series of revelations were given concerning the region and the specific strongholds of the enemy attempting to hinder the Lord's outpouring in the Northwest. In one specific experience, the Lord revealed how the adversary has released "cyclone fences" in his attempt to separate and divide the believers of this region.
In the very place in which the Lord is calling for harmony and fraternal affection, the enemy has released division and self-preservation. The Holy Spirit is granting a deposit of divine grace to eradicate the separation and bring genuine unity among a body of leaders within the region. The very fact that the enemy has targeted this area, clearly points to the divine purpose and destiny for the Northwest.
That is not to say that all separations and sifting has been the result of the enemy. There has been a measure of shaking taking place within some churches that has been orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. This has been for the purpose of refining certain fellowships in preparation for visitation. Nonetheless, the lines of division drawn by the enemy are clearly marked with envy, jealousy and strife.
One of the ways in which the seeds of jealousy will be overcome is by rejoicing with individuals and churches who enjoy some expression of visitation. Rather than allowing envy to enter, celebration will overcome the seeds of division and pave the way for divine favor and grace.

Bob's Vision

A few weeks ago, Bob was given a clear vision involving the Pacific Northwest and the Lord's heart for that region. Over the last nine years, I have heard Bob share hundreds of visions. However, rarely have I ever seen him as enthusiastic and emphatic as he was in sharing this revelation.
The vision began with him seeing a spiritual hourglass. He watched as the sand elapsed from the hourglass denoting that "time had run out." It was clearly communicated that the time has now come for divine purposes to be established in "the land of beauty." This expression concerning the land came from the Lord to signify His desire to establish "spiritual beauty" in the Northwest--- clearly a place of natural beauty. The Scripture that accompanied this revelation was Zechariah 11:7.
So I fed the flock for slaughter, in particular the poor of the flock. I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock. (Zech 11:7)
They are the divine staff's of "beauty" and "bands/unity." Bob saw in the vision, a tangible release of glory and beauty that is represented by the beauty of the land itself.
This is pointing to a release of favor and covenant or relationship among the people, through the divine grace that is coming. It is the land of immense splendor and attraction. The Lord is announcing His desire for the Heavens to be open in the land of great beauty. The hourglass has run out of sand. This will be a new beginning.
Nature itself will declare the handiwork of God. It is the emergence of His righteous "staffs" to heal and restore hurt and wounded sheep. The windows of Heaven were opened in the vision and revealed, through nature, the beauty of Heaven in the Pacific Northwest. How beautiful and awesome it was orchestrated.

Spreading to The West

Once deposited, this spiritual provision will go from the Northwest to the west and down to as far as Phoenix AZ. Somehow Phoenix was involved in this revelation. It is an old well that people thought was dried and filled with debris but now will be flushed of hindrances and obstacles in order to flow freely. Somehow in this divine scheme, Phoenix and the surrounding area is important.

March Conference

Presently, we are planning a conference in Coeur d'Alene March 6-8 [of 2004].
One of the additional encouragements from Bob's vision involved the leadership team for the conference. He saw there would be no division in the team. Instead, he saw covenant relationships and fraternal affection among the people participating. This will be necessary to touch heaven in a unified way to release the provision of Heaven to open the window over the Pacific Northwest.
He saw us, and those participating in the conference, as if we were sitting at a banqueting table- which he felt was the Psalm 103. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, {bless} His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; (Ps 103:1-4)
The Heavens became an open window to provide the benefits of God. This is to pave the way for strong evangelism.

Strong Evangelism

Bob saw in his vision, a man we know and recognize as an international evangelist, especially among young people. This aspect of the Lord's plan comes after the prophetic voice opens the window in the land of beauty. What is released in the coming days, will pave the way for strong evangelism.
He saw leadership teams coming together as a threefold cord - a very strong bond that is not easily broken. Bob saw a purging of the soul taking place in the conference through the worship. Once the soul of the people has been cleansed, it then allows for the beauty of the Lord to begin to fill them. It is to prepare a people to begin to enjoy the benefits of Heaven as described in Psalms 103. When we "eat" from the 103rd Psalm we have the strength to go forward.

Conclusion

Since receiving these revelations, we have discovered that Bob was in Coeur d'Alene 13-14 years ago. We have also now obtained a copy of the taped message delivered back then. It is interesting to discover that the essence of the word given at that time is the same as today. It outlined the Lord's desire to bring unity in place of division and pave the way for strong evangelism that will touch the entire region including portions of Canada.
As we have pointed out in our newsletter, we believe this year is the beginning of a new seven-year season of the Spirit. It is a new beginning that will change the spiritual environment in which we live. These times will be characterized by the Justice of God, unveiling both the kindness and severity of God. We must strive with all that is within us to be trustworthy stewards of this heritage and guard, through the Holy Spirit, the great treasures entrusted to us.
